Rockford area high school students were invited to the UIC Rockford campus to participate in the new ¡Salud! Scholars Program, a three-day health career camp sponsored through UIC Rockford's Rural Medical Education Program. With UIC medical students serving as mentors, the high school students were introduced to the world of health care and health profession through hands-on activities on the campus, including in the Simulation Center at the College of Medicine Rockford, where they learned about checking vital signs and preparing medical prescriptions. The students also participated in career development activities, such as career assessments and a skills inventory. The program culminated in a special Blue Coat Ceremony in which the mentors presented the students with certificates of completion and a blue lab coat.

Funding for the ¡Salud! Scholars Program has been provided by the John D. Brubaker Foundation.
