Amidst growing concern that the healthcare workforce is insufficient to meet our nation’s health needs, UI Health can be proud of its most recent contribution to that workforce. Throughout the week of May 1, 2023, UIC’s seven health sciences colleges held commencement ceremonies honoring a total of 1,843 graduates who will carry the knowledge, skills and experience they’ve gained at UIC into a variety of settings in Chicago, Illinois and beyond. Additionally, with a growing understanding of the need for minority representation in the health professions, 648 of those graduates – roughly 35% – were underrepresented minority students.
Dr. Robert Barish, UIC vice chancellor for health affairs, remarked on the talent and dedication of the 2023 graduating class. ”Our graduates have met rigorous requirements and learned from the formidable training of UIC’s distinguished faculty, and it is evident to me that they will continue into successful careers as clinicians, researchers, innovators and advocates for equity,” he said. ”I hope they will use the sense of initiative and excitement that was fostered here at UIC to establish new paths for those who will follow in their footsteps.”
