Total research funding at UIC for fiscal year 2022 was $459.4 million, marking the university’s fourth record-breaking year in a row and supporting more than 3,200 research projects. Of that total amount, $337.7 million, or 74%, was for UI Health research projects at the seven health science colleges and within the healthcare system. This is a testament to UIC’s strength as an R1 research university, driving innovation in Illinois and beyond, and the strength of UI Health in securing funding to drive discovery and promote health equity. Within UI Health, the College of Medicine again topped the list with $205 million of funding, supporting a wide variety of translational research projects.

UIC Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Dr. Robert A. Barish said, “While we are very proud of the research funding received across the enterprise, the dollar amount is not what really matters. What’s truly important is how our research improves health outcomes and increases health equity for all communities.”
